7 more exotic destinations you can visit for the price of a weekend in Las Vegas

One of the most popular presentations I’ve ever given has been about seven exotic locations you can visit for the price of a Vegas weekend. Since I last spoke on the topic, travelers have been eager to know if I’ve added any more destinations to my list, and where they can go in 2013 to turn their ordinary trip into an extraordinary vacation.

So when I was asked to speak at the 2013 Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show, I knew this was a topic I wanted to revisit. I spoke for a little over 15 minutes this year, covering seven more exotic destinations to visit for the price of a Vegas weekend. We caught the speech on film for everyone who couldn’t make it, so just hit play to listen in.

After watching my speech, do you plan on visiting any of the destinations I mentioned? I’d love to hear about your travel plans in a comment below.

A trip to The Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show could win you a trip to Ecador

You might have thought we were putting all our metaphorical eggs in one basket when we announced that we’re giving away six Friendly Planet Travel tours to our Facebook fans, but we have something up our sleeves for Philadelphia locals too.

If you go to The Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show at The Pennsylvania Convention Center this weekend, you have the chance to win a trip for two on Friendly Planet Travel’s Exotic Ecuador tour, a $3,000 value.

Friendly Planet Travel will be exhibiting at booth #416, where you can enter to win our trip to Ecuador. The Friendly Planet Travel team and I will be at the booth answering questions, offering travel tips and advice, and distributing information too, so there will be a lot going on. All you have to do is stop by for your chance to win! This is the second year in a row we’re giving away a trip to travel show attendees. Last year, we gave a trip to China to Larry and Wendy Kleeman. See their reactions!

I’m also honored to be presenting at the show again this year. I’ll be discussing the “Top 10 Affordable Destinations of 2012” on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 12 p.m. I’ll share the must-visit destinations for 2012 that promise to inspire even savvy travelers, without breaking the bank. And I’m proud to be the only local tour operator licensed to offer legal educational tour programs to Cuba, so I’ll delve into how to visit Cuba legally and at an affordable price.

All this, and entrance to the show only costs $10 ($8 if you pre-register)! I’m looking forward to sharing my advice and talking to travelers in person, so I hope I’ll see you there!

Seven exotic locations for the price of a Vegas weekend

When I was at The Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show, I got the opportunity to present attendees with “Seven Exotic Locations for the Price of a Vegas Weekend.” The response I got was overwhelming. The room filled up to standing room only for the entire 30 minutes! I felt like I was on American Idol.

When I got another opportunity to present at The New York Times Travel Show the following month, I knew I had to share these locations with this new crowd. Unfortunately, I only had 15 minutes to speak, so I trimmed the presentation down to five exotic locations.

After both presentations, travelers flooded Friendly Planet Travel’s booth with questions about these destinations, and I answered every single one. It seemed this topic struck a chord with travelers. Good thing we got it all on camera. :)

In case you missed it, here is my presentation at The Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show on “Seven Exotic Locations for the Price of a Vegas Weekend.” Hit play, and if you have any questions, leave them in a comment on this post and I will respond.

Coming up is the video of my second presentation from The Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show on “How to Compare Travel Offers for the Best Value.” Stay tuned for the footage.

What you missed at The New York Times Travel Show

It took me a little longer than anticipated to get caught up after coming back from The New York Times Travel Show. But things have settled down, and I want to tell you all about the premier travel show in the U.S.

Let’s get to the most exciting news first — the winners of our Kenya Safari Express tour, Taj Mahal Express tour, and Nikon S8100 digital camera.

When the show came to a close on Sunday, I randomly selected three names from the Friendly Planet Travel globe, where attendees dropped in their names. I pulled three names out, and I’m thrilled to announce that Katy C. Li was the winner of the Kenya Safari Express! Congrats Katy!

You’re going to love Africa’s sweeping vistas, teeming cities, and magnificent wildlife. To see more details about the trip Katy won, flip back to my previous post. We’re still trying to reach the other winners to claim their prize. So, check your e-mail and voice mail, as you might be one of our winners! When the winners do claim their prizes, we’ll announce them on the blog.

Thank you to all the travelers who stopped by our booth last weekend and to those who saw my presentation on the “Five Exotic Locations for the Price of a Vegas Weekend.” I’ll be posting the video of my presentation in the coming weeks in case you missed it.

I also want to say thank you to Stephanie Abrams, host of “Travel with Stephanie Abrams!” for having me on her radio show live from the Travel Show on Saturday. If you missed Stephanie’s broadcast, you can download episodes on her website.

The Friendly Planet Travel blogging team was on the ground at the Travel Show talking to travelers all weekend too. They even got a handful of attendees to take Friendly Planet Travel’s trivia quiz. Melissa, one of our bloggers, quizzed travelers all weekend. I’ll post the video soon so you can see how much these travelers know about the globe they love to trek.

We also got the opportunity to talk with Kate Appleton, Senior Editor of Budget Travel. Melissa talked to Kate about the state of airport security, her favorite destination (hint: it has a canal running through it), her thoughts on whether you should choose the better deal over the better value when booking a trip, and much more.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be posting videos from the show, so keep your eyes peeled to the blog. But if you can’t wait, here are a few photos we snapped from The New York Times Travel Show.

Friendly Planet Travel is heading to The New York Times Travel Show this weekend to give attendees the chance to win a free trip for two on our Kenya Safari Express or Taj Mahal Express.

And that’s not all. We’re also giving away a Nikon S8100 digital camera. To enter to win, stop by Friendly Planet Travel’s booth, #276, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The winners will be randomly selected and announced right here on the blog on Monday, Feb. 28.

In addition to our giveaways, I’ll be presenting “Five Exotic Locations for the Price of a Vegas Weekend” on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. on the Europe stage. Stop by and I’ll tell you all about the exotic spots around the globe that offer your family an unforgettable experience of a lifetime for the cost of the typical trip down the shore.

Back at our booth, we’ll have tour information, snacks, an international slide show with images of the places we visit, and show-only discount coupons valid for many of our tours. You’ll have a chance to win other great prizes just by spinning our Friendly prize wheel!

I’ll also be on hand as well as other Friendly Planet Travel experts to answer all your travel questions. And if you’re ready and find your dream trip while you’re at our booth, you’ll be able to book on the spot using our online booking engine.

As you can see, we have a lot planned for this show. If you still need to buy tickets, you can get them online. Adults are $15 and kids under 18 are free. For just $15, you could win a trip to Kenya, India, or a camera in a New York minute. And that’s in addition to the spectacular performances and activities planned for show visitors.

The New York Times Travel Show is one of the premier travel shows in the country. There are over 300 booths in addition to Friendly Planet Travel’s, but I have a special spot in my heart for booth #276!

But let’s get back to the good stuff — the prizes! Here are more details. The Kenya Safari Express takes travelers to the Masai Mara and Samburu game reserves where Africa’s big five game walks right past you. You’ll experience Africa’s sweeping vistas, teeming cities, and magnificent wildlife. Get the day-by-day details of the trip in my previous posts about Kenya.

Included are roundtrip airfare from New York’s JFK airport on award-winning Emirates Airlines; accommodations at deluxe hotels and superior safari lodges; game-viewing drives with experienced game spotters with a guaranteed window seat and access to a pop-up roof hatch; a boat safari on Lake Naivasha; comprehensive sightseeing tours in Nairobi by local, English-speaking guides; all transfers and land transportation; many meals, and more.

The Taj Mahal Express tour take you on expert-guided tours of the Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikhri, Jaipur (known as the “pink city”), and the Amber Fort, with an ascent on elephant or a Jeep. You also get a one-day tour in Delhi that takes you to its most important sites, such as the Laxmi Narayan Temple, Raj Ghat, the Red Fort, and more. There’s much more, but you can read about it in my recent posts.

The tour includes roundtrip airfare from New York on Emirates; superior first-class hotels; daily buffet breakfasts; an authentic Indian farewell dinner in Delhi; expert guides throughout the journey; fuel surcharges, transfers, and much more.

The Nikon S8100 features a 3-inch, high-resolution clear color display. It has 12.1 megapixals with a 10X wide Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens, covering 30-300 mm. It also comes with Optical VR Image Stabilzation, high ISO sensitivity to 3200, and a new flash control system. Plus, you can record full 1080p HD movies with stereo sound.

I hope to see you this weekend! And if you can’t make it, we’ll be recapping the whole show right here on the blog.

Reflecting on the 2011 Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show

We had a great time at The Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show this past weekend, and I can’t wait to tell you all about it. But first, let’s get to the most exciting news: The winners of our Taste of China tour, Taj Mahal Express tour, and Nikon S8100 digital camera.

On Sunday at 3:15 p.m., my special guest Corrine dug her hand into a fishbowl full of names and picked the three winners. For a trip for two on the Taste of China tour, we called out Larry Kleeman. Larry and his wife Wendy were in the crowd to accept their free trip!

Melissa, a Friendly Planet Travel blogger, interviewed them right after they got the news. I can’t put their excitement into words, so I’ll let them do it themselves. Watch the video below.

Congrats again Larry and Wendy! You’re going to have an amazing trip. We announced the winners of the Taj Mahal Express tour and the Nikon S8100 digital camera, but neither winner was there to accept their prize. So if you entered our drawing, check your e-mail and voice mail, we’re trying to reach you!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth to enter to win and who showed up to my presentations on Saturday and Sunday. It was gratifying to see the room fill up to standing room only. I hope every one of you took something valuable away from “7 Exotic Locations for the Price of a Vegas Weekend” and “How to Compare Travel Offers for the Best Value.”

And in case you missed it, we have the video! I’ll post it in the coming days. I wasn’t the only presenter at the show. I was in the amazing company of Arthur and Pauline Frommer, which was very exciting for me. After all, without Arthur Frommer’s “Europe on $5 a Day,” I might never have figured out that travel to the far corners of the world can be inexpensive as well as thrilling. Melissa interviewed Pauline and Arthur and got a few of their travel guidebooks autographed.

She also got a few minutes with Patricia Schultz, travel journalist and author of “1,000 Places to See Before You Die.” When I post the interviews, I’ll tell you how you can win autographed copies of the Frommer’s travel guidebooks as well as Patricia’s book.

P.J. Thomas, Founding Editor of Pathfinders Travel Magazine and Travel Journalist Reid Bramblett stopped by Friendly Planet Travel’s booth for quick interviews too. Thanks Pauline, Arthur, Patricia, P.J., Reid, and the dozens of attendees who spoke to the Friendly Planet Travel blogging team.

Our blogging team found out what travelers thought about the TSA’s new airport security measures, airline ticket prices, as well as their favorite piece of travel advice, the #1 item they need in their carry-on bag, and much more. You’ll hear all their answers and a few fun surprises in the videos that are coming soon.

Friendly Planet Travel had a great time at The Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show! Thanks again to everyone who attended. Stay in touch with the blog, videos and giveaways are on the way!

Reminder: Friendly Planet Travel is giving away a trip to China and India at The Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show

Before the weekend officially starts, I wanted to remind you that Friendly Planet Travel is giving away an extraordinary trip for two on our Taste of China tour or the Taj Mahal Express tour at The Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show this weekend. In addition, we’re also giving away a Nikon S8100 digital camera.

All you have to do is stop by Friendly Planet Travel’s booth, #514, on Saturday or Sunday to enter for your chance to win. On Monday, we’ll announce all three winners right here on the blog! Besides giving away amazing prizes, I will be giving two presentations.

“7 Exotic Locations for the Price of a Vegas Weekend” is slated for Saturday at 12:15 p.m. and “How to Compare Travel Offers for the Best Value” is scheduled for Sunday at 11:15 a.m. Flip back to my previous post to get all the details on our prizes and my presentations.

Friendly Planet Travel bloggers will also be on the show floor interviewing attendees and members of the media to find out the hottest trends in travel and much more. Keep your eyes peeled to the blog next week as we post videos, podcasts, and more from The Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show.

Hope to see you at the show!

A trip to The Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show this weekend could send you to China or India

Philly’s more fun when you win a trip to China or India! If you go to The Philadelphia Inquirer Travel Show at The Pennsylvania Convention Center this weekend, you have the chance to win an extraordinary trip for two on Friendly Planet Travel’s Taste of China tour or the Taj Mahal Express tour. And those two trips aren’t the only prizes attendees can win. We’re also giving away a Nikon S8100 digital camera.

Friendly Planet Travel will be exhibiting at the show at booth #514 where attendees can register to win. It’s that simple. The winners will be randomly selected and announced right here on the blog on Monday.

If you do make it to the show, please stop by booth #514 and say hello! I’ll be there all weekend. I’ll also be giving two presentations. “7 Exotic Locations for the Price of a Vegas Weekend” will reveal the exotic spots on the globe that offer your family an unforgettable experience of a lifetime for the cost of the typical week down the shore or a long weekend in Vegas. That’s slated for Saturday at 12:15 p.m. on the entertainment stage.

And “How to Compare Travel Offers for the Best Value” will teach you how to compare different packages and uncover hidden fees to slim down your cost without slimming down your experience. That’s scheduled for Sunday at 11:15 a.m. And I’ll be answering your travel questions after each presentation.

If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, you can still do so online. Adults are $10 and kids under 18 are free. So for just $10, you could win a trip to China, India, or a pretty snazzy camera. Not a bad deal, right? And that’s in addition to the abundance of travel information and fun planned for show visitors.

There are 63 booths in addition to Friendly Planet Travel’s, although I personally have a preference for booth #514! We will have lots of material, an international slide show with amazing images of the many places around the world we visit, and special, show-only discount coupons valid for many of our tours.

Here are more details on our prizes.

The winner of the Taste of China tour visits three of China’s most dynamic and culturally awe-inspiring cities: Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai. Included are roundtrip airfare from Los Angeles via Air China including fuel surcharges; all ground transfers; all intra-China flights; deluxe and first class hotel accommodations with private bath; many meals; comprehensive sightseeing with a local, English-speaking expert guide; and more. Jump back to my previous posts on the tour find out all the sights you’ll see in each city.

The Taj Mahal Express tour includes roundtrip airfare from New York on Emirates; superior first-class hotels; daily buffet breakfasts; an authentic Indian farewell dinner in Delhi; expert guides throughout the journey; fuel surcharges, transfers, and much more.

While in India, we take you on expert-guided tours of the Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikhri, Jaipur (known as the “pink city”), and the Amber Fort, with an ascent on elephant or a Jeep. You also get a one-day tour in Delhi that takes you to its most important sites, such as the Laxmi Narayan Temple, Raj Ghat, the Red Fort, and more. Your tour concludes with a rickshaw tour through Old Delhi’s most popular street market, Chandni Chowk. There’s so much more, but you can read about it in my recent posts.

I hope to see you this weekend! If you can’t make it, you’ll have another chance to see us at The New York Times Travel Show where we’ll be exhibiting on Feb. 25 to 27. But more to come on that in a future post.
