Exploring the wonders of Thailand with a devoted and passionate local guide

I always look back on my trip to Thailand with fond memories. One of the biggest reasons why I had such a memorable experience is due, in large part, to our local tour guide Lek, who was warm, welcoming, and extremely knowledgeable about Thailand’s history, attractions, and culture.

Now, as we end our Exotic Malaysia & Thailand Sweepstakes, is a good opportunity for Lek to share with our readers what makes Thailand special from a native’s perspective, and what travelers can look forward to seeing when they visit. Read on for our Q-and-A with her.

Q: Lek, could you please share a bit of your background with us?

A: I was born, raised, and educated in Bangkok. After graduating from high school, I attended the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus [for college]. I was a secretary major, and then joined the travel industry. I’ve worked for several agencies, but I’ve been with Exotissimo, Friendly Planet’s local supplier, for almost ten years!

Q: What made you decide that you wanted to get into the travel industry?

A: When I was young I had contact with foreigners because I attended Catholic school. The nuns who came from abroad taught me English, and I got to know them. My interactions with the nuns and priests sparked my interest in travel, and I envisioned joining the travel industry by possibly becoming a flight attendant.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about being a tour guide? (more…)

Customer testimonial: Feeling like honorary Ecuadorians

Hearing what a wonderful job our tour guides do always makes me proud. I love getting feedback about our trips, and I recently received some rave reviews about our Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands tour.

I wanted to share one with you from a couple who found their tour guide to be above and beyond their expectations.

"In writing our evaluation, we did not have enough room to tell you about our guide, Patricio. He was, without a doubt, the most friendly, patient, and knowledgeable guide we have had out of many tours we have taken. We hope that you will pass this information on to the Friendly Planet office in Ecuador, as we feel that he should be given special recognition for the superb representation of your company. We had two medical emergencies with travelers in our group. He was able to get doctors for them and arrange for one of them to join our trip the next day.(The other man refused treatment, as this wasw an on-going medical problem, and was fine the next morning.) Another time, while telling us of the exportation from Ecuador of roses, he asked our driver, Jose, to stop for a moment. He came back a few minutes later with roses for all of the women on the bus! These were just two of the many kindnesses he extended to our group. He really understands the meaning of "guest service" and is to be commended for the way he conducts a tour. We came away feeling like honorary Ecuadorians!"

Friendly Planet Travel Podcasts: chatting with China

At Friendly Planet Travel, we’re in constant communication with our tour guides around the world. We just like to be sure that we’re completely on top of everything that’s taking place in every Friendly Planet Travel destination, and make sure our guides know they’re doing a fantastic job. In fact, the No. 1 praise we receive from returning travelers is all in thanks to the great work done by our talented and informative tour guides.
Since our guides play such an integral role in your Friendly Planet Travel experience, we thought it would be a great idea to kick off a podcast series in which you can get to know a little bit about some of the locals.
FP_SamLui.JPG
First up in our series is Sam Liu. Sam has been a Friendly Planet Travel tour guide in China for the past nine years. Last week, Bridget, one of our Friendly Planeteers, had the opportunity to speak to Sam, and learn a little bit about what it’s like to be a Friendly Planet Tour guide in China.
We’re thankful Sam could take the time out of his busy schedule to chat with us for a few minutes, as he was getting ready to leave for the annual Duanwu Festival, otherwise known as the Dragon Boat Festival.
