How to avoid Debbie Downer as a travel companion

Who and how many people you travel with can make or break a vacation. And after organizing exotic group tours for 30 years, I know exactly the mix of people you want to have on a trip to make your vacation an extraordinary one.

Find out what that mix is made of in the Frommer’s article, “How to Plan a Girlfriend Getaway.” The five things writer Lisa Cheng tells you to consider when picking the right mix of travel companions doesn’t just apply to girlfriends either. If you’re traveling with family or male companions, her advice still rings true.

Hop over to give it a read. Thanks again Lisa for including me in your piece!

Discussing Japan travel on Around the World Travel Radio

Although the nuclear crisis in Japan caused us to suspend Friendly Planet Travel’s Japan Panorama tours, we will be among the first tour operators to resume travel to Japan when it’s safe.

I was able to tell this to Arthur von Wiesenberger on Around the World Travel Radio last Thursday. Tune into the podcast to get an update on the situation in Japan and how it’s affecting travelers.

You’ll also find out why Friendly Planet travelers aren’t losing any money when we suspend tours, why other travelers should hold off on traveling to Japan until the nuclear crisis is resolved, and why the Japanese need time to recover before welcoming travelers back. Thanks again Arthur for having me as a guest!

Vietnam: The last place on Earth you’d ever associate with luxury

When you think of Vietnam, you probably remember the war overseas and civil unrest in the United States. But the truth is, the war ended in 1975 and the relationship between the U.S. and Vietnam has been mended. More recently, Vietnam has become one of the most exotic destinations on Earth to experience.

That’s why JustLuxe asked me to cover it. JustLuxe is an online magazine that focuses only on the most luxurious things in life, especially those unexpected luxuries that they can reveal to their readers. And Vietnam is, for obvious reasons, the perfect fit. Its beauty and simplicity of life, juxtaposed against its emerging economy, makes it one of my favorite countries to visit.

During my last trip to the country, I got to enjoy a luxurious overnight cruise aboard the Emeraude on Halong Bay. In my guest article, “Sail the Halong Bay and Explore Vietnam on the Emeraude,” I share every detail about my stay aboard the ship. Read what my experience was like, and if you have questions about Vietnam, leave them in a comment on this post.

Thanks again JustLuxe for featuring my article!

The New York Times calls out our Taste of China tour as a great way save money on a trip to Asia

Asia is a popular destination for savvy travelers, but it’s usually an expensive one.

But if there’s one person who can tell you how to trim your travel budget without trimming your experience, it’s Michelle Higgins of the The New York Times.

Her Practical Traveler column is widely read by travelers who want to see the world at a reasonable price.

So you can imagine how thrilled I was when she featured Friendly Planet Travel’s Taste of China tour in her article, “Saving Money on a Trip to Asia.”

She uses it as one of the ways to save when booking a trip to Asia because it combines air and hotel. I was even able to tell Michelle how travelers can experience all the wonders of Asia for hundreds of dollar less simply by going in the off season.

There’s one thing about Friendly Planet Travel that differs us from other money-saving tours. We don’t just save you money, we give you the extraordinary for the price of ordinary.

Thanks Michelle for featuring Friendly Planet Travel in your column! Head over to the article to get all of Michelle’s money-saving tips. And if you’re interested in traveling to Asia, look at the 13 tours Friendly Planet Travel offers.

FOXNews Live gives travelers in Egypt tips on how to get home

Earlier today I was a guest on FOXNews LIVE in the segment, “Brings Travelers Home from Egypt.” I was able to share the great news with Anchor Arthell Neville that every Friendly Planet traveler who was in Egypt will be safely back in the U.S. today.

In fact, since the interviewed aired, the EgyptAir flight carrying our 26 travelers touched down at JFK International Airport late this afternoon. I’m letting out a big exhale right now. Welcome home travelers!

Although our travelers are back in the U.S., it doesn’t mean our work is over. A lot of other travelers are still trying to get on planes out of Egypt. I talked to Arthell about what travelers in Egypt and their families at home can do to ensure they get on a flight out of Egypt.

Go ahead and hit play to watch the segment. Thanks Arthell for having me on as a guest. I hope we were able to bring some valuable information to travelers who need it the most right now.

The Christian Science Monitor looks at the worried families of travelers in Egypt

With the protests in Egypt turning violent, family and friends with loved ones in Egypt are getting increasingly nervous about their safety.

Gloria Goodale, staff writer for The Christian Science Monitor, covered this concern in her article, “Egypt protests from afar: Americans wait nervously for loved ones’ return.”

I spoke to Gloria about the work Friendly Planet Travel has been doing since the protests erupted to secure the safe arrival of our travelers in Egypt back in the U.S. She was kind enough to include this information in her article.

Thankfully, after days of nonstop work, Friendly Planet travelers are on their way home today. But thousands of other Americans are still waiting to get on a plane, which is nerve wracking for family members. Flip over to the article now to read how families are coping. Thanks again Gloria for including Friendly Planet Travel in your article.

How to bring adventure to your vacation without increasing the cost

If zip lining over a rainforest’s canopy or hiking dormant volcanoes is more along the lines of an ideal vacation for you, hop over to Kayleigh Kulp’s recent article, “Action-Packed Vacations Don’t Have to Break the Bank” on Fox Business.

I shared my thoughts with Kayleigh on how to turn an ordinary trip into an extraordinary one with activities that won’t make you dig deep into your pocket. Any traveler considering transforming their dull trip to dare-devilish adventure should read through her article.

Thanks Kayleigh for including my thoughts!

The Washington Post features our Taste of China tour as a ‘travel bargain’

My new year started off on a high note when I picked up The Washington Post on Sunday. Carol Sottili featured Friendly Planet Travel’s Taste of China tour in her travel column, “What’s the deal? Travel bargains from around the globe.”

Thanks Carol for featuring our tour! Hit Carol’s article to find out why she named Taste of China one of her travel bargains this week.

Friendly Planet Travel rounds out 2010 with media mentions

Before I put 2010 behind me, I have a few more things to take care of. One those is extending thank yous to the editors who covered Friendly Planet Travel’s Captivating Costa Rica, Best of Turkey, and Pyramids and Nile Cruise tours in December. Read on to see what pubs these Friendly Planet Travel tours landed in.

Frommer’s listed Friendly Planet Travel’s Best of Turkey tour on its “5 Deals for December 1, 2010.”

Captivating Cost Rica made an appearance on “Frommer’s 5 Deals for December 15, 2010.”

Lastly, Oregon Travel Daily talked about our Pyramids and Nile Cruise when we announced new departure dates.
